Solar panels function effectively on roofs with a southern, southeast, or southwest orientation. While solar panels positioned facing due south yield optimal results, those placed facing east or west will still perform at around 86% of their efficiency when compared to south-facing panels.

The electricity generated by your Solar Panels is transformed from DC (direct current) to AC (alternating current) by the inverter, which is the type of electricity your UK home uses. This AC electricity is then transferred from the inverter through an AC cable to your distribution board. From there, it powers the various circuits throughout your home.
In short no. In the event of a power outage, your inverter will automatically turn off. This prevents any electricity generated by your Solar Panels from entering your property. This safety measure is in place to ensure the well-being of workers who might be repairing the grid.
