Thinking about making the switch to an electric car? Now could be the perfect time. Thanks to a newly announced £650 million Electric Car Grant (ECG) from the UK government, you could save up to £3,750 on the cost of a new electric vehicle, making EV ownership far more accessible to UK households. At Nano, we’re excited to see how this scheme supports our mission of clean, affordable transport powered by renewables.
What is the Electric Car Grant?
Launched by the Department for Transport and the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles, this newly unveiled grant scheme is aimed at slashing the upfront cost of EVs and accelerating the UK’s shift away from petrol and diesel. With grants of up to £3,750 per vehicle, this initiative could save households thousands while supporting the government’s goal of phasing out new petrol and diesel cars by 2030.
The grant is available for electric vehicles priced at or under £37,000, which means a wide range of models qualify, including many ideal for families, city commuters, and eco-conscious drivers looking for great value. This means that now is the perfect time to think about getting an EV charger installed to beat the rush and start maximising your savings!
Who’s Eligible — And When Can You Apply?
While consumers don’t apply directly, you’ll still benefit: car manufacturers can begin registering their eligible electric vehicles with the scheme from 16 July 2025. Once approved, you’ll see eligible EVs automatically discounted at the dealership or online, which means no paperwork and no waiting around. Funding will remain available until the 2028–2029 financial year, offering a long-term boost to EV affordability.
Why This Matters for UK Drivers
Cost is still one of the biggest barriers for drivers considering electric cars. The ECG helps close the price gap between petrol and electric, opening the door to savings that extend beyond the forecourt. According to the government, switching to an EV can save drivers up to £1,500 per year on fuel and running costs.
And that’s not all: this incentive stacks with other benefits like lower road tax, zero emissions zone access, and reduced maintenance costs, making it not just good for the planet, but great for your wallet.
The Bigger Picture: What the Government is Doing
The grant is part of a wider £4.5 billion investment to accelerate EV adoption and secure the UK’s position as a global leader in zero-emission driving. The strategy includes:
- £1.6 billion to fix potholes and maintain roads
- £63 million to support EV charging at homes without driveways
- £6 billion pledged by private companies toward charging infrastructure
More than 82,000 public chargepoints now exist across the UK, with a new one being installed roughly every 29 minutes. This level of infrastructure development means you can now drive with confidence whether you’re at home, at work, or travelling long distances.
Eco Friendly and Industry Backed
The grant scheme isn’t just about affordability, it’s also focused on sustainability. Only vehicles that meet the highest environmental manufacturing standards will be eligible, which helps promote greener practices across the auto industry.
Industry leaders such as the RAC, ChargeUK, and SMMT have hailed the announcement as a “game changer.” From more affordable cars to expanding infrastructure, they believe this scheme will push EV adoption into the mainstream and help the UK hit its climate targets faster.
Why It’s the Right Time to Switch
With more than 380,000 zero-emission vehicles registered in the UK last year, the tide is turning, and with the new ECG scheme in place, there’s never been a better time to make the move and invest in a home EV charger for your electric vehicle. Whether you’re upgrading your current vehicle or investing in your first EV, the savings available through the grant make it easier than ever.
At Nano, we’re all about helping our customers pair electric vehicles with clean, solar-powered energy systems and battery storage, creating complete home energy ecosystems. And with this new grant, you can start saving immediately while cutting your carbon footprint long-term.
